Google Maps factors in things like road inclines and traffic congestion to find which routes are most fuel efficient. It is not as easy as choosing the path of least miles. By default, Google Maps will give priority to these eco-friendly routes if the Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) is the same as the fastest route. You can also manually select these routes yourself.
Comment: At the time of writing in October 2021, fuel-efficient routes are only available through the Google Maps mobile apps on iPhone, iPad, and Android. It is not available on desktop.

To get started, open Google Maps on your iPhone, ipadeither Android Device. Find the place you want to go and tap “Directions”.
Now you will see some possible routes you can take. If Google Maps has already selected the most fuel-efficient route, you’ll see a leaf sign on the route highlighted blue.
If the fuel-efficient route isn’t already selected, just tap it to make it your route.
With the desired route selected, tap “Start” to begin turn-by-turn navigation. You are on your way!
It is unfortunate that Google is not making this feature available in the desktop version of Google Maps.
